Gum Disease – Is it contagious?

Gum disease is, in fact, contagious.

Most parents don’t know this! You can transfer the bacteria in your saliva to your baby or child by sharing eating utensils, cups, or anything else that goes in the mouth. Once that pathogenic bacteria is introduced it can grow and multiply, contributing to bad breath, and even cavities, gingivitis, or periodontal disease.

The lesson here is – don’t share utensils or toothbrushes. Even though our mothers would use their saliva to clean our faces, don’t let history repeat itself with your kids.  Lastly, please don’t use your saliva to clean a dropped pacifier or teether. Especially during this terrible flu season we don’t want to make matter worse!
