Healthy and Fun Treats for Kids

Halloween is a fun event for children and adults alike.  Even if you choose not to celebrate Halloween, there are many people who celebrate this season as harvest time. Whatever your preference, this time is filled with lots of tempting treats. Often these treats can be detrimental to the health of our children’s teeth, body, and brains. To prevent (or at least limit) high sugar exposure that can lead to cavities, as well as high energy bursts and the melt downs that follow, you could try these low sugar, high nutrient, and super fun treats with your little ones this year.

What you need: cucumber slices, cream cheese, chia seeds, baby carrots, raisins

How you make it (per spider):

  1. Mix together 1 Tbsp. cream cheese with 1 Tbsp. chia seeds until well mixed.
  2. Place one cucumber slice on a plate and add cream cheese mixture on top.
  3. Place two raisins as eyes for the spider.
  4. Slice baby carrot in half and then cut each half into quarters creating 8 legs.
  5. Add carrot pieces to the edge of the cream cheese and enjoy!

What you need: Royal Gala apple, almond butter, and sliced almonds

How you make it:

  1. Core apple, and cut it into wedges. For each wedge cut out a space to create the look of “a mouth”.

What you need: 1 avocado, 1 lime, 1 tsp olive oil, 1 red pepper

How you make it:

  1. Mash the avocado and the olive oil and the juice of ½ the lime.
  2. Place mash on a small plate in a circle.
  3. Grate the lime peel and add the top of the mash as “crazy monster hair”.
  4. Slice the pepper into thin pieces and use these for eyes, nose, and mouth.
  5. Use as a dip for whole grain crackers and/or veggies.

What you need: 1 watermelon

How you make it:

  1. Carve the watermelon the same way you would a pumpkin and offer the scooped out melon as a snack on the side. YUM!
